"I began coaching football at Rio Linda High School after my playing days came to an end, following the advice of my father-in-law Dave Venable, who was the offensive line coach at RLHS at the time. I quickly fell in love with the players and community. The Knights won the section championship in 2004 and I decided that it was time to see what else was out there and try to become a head coach. I landed at Hiram Johnson High School and was their head coach for two seasons. I decided that it was not a good fit at HJHS and came back to RLHS in 2007. I became a teacher on campus that same year and served as the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Line Coach until 2013 for Coach Mike Morris. When he stepped down after that season I was welcomed to Coach Justin Reber’s staff under the same title. After the 2014 season I decided that I wanted to coach my own son, James, with the Wheatland Jr Pirates program. When this job opened again this January, as a family, we decided that it was a sign that I should apply for the position and return to where I was most comfortable as a coach and try to restore some of the tradition that seems to have been lost over the past few years.
I treasure this position and I hold it in the highest regard. I don’t care who you are, you don’t understand what Rio Linda has to offer unless you have been here. It is unlike any other place in this region. My wife of 15 years, Amanda, is a 1996 graduate of RLHS. Our two children, James (10) and Avery (7), are extremely excited for this opportunity as well. I am honored to be here and I look forward to seeing some familiar faces every Friday night! GO KNIGHTS!"
